API Active Target™: the Next Generation SMR

The latest invention in laser tracking technology is API´s newly designed Active Target™. This compact device allows automated laser tracker measurements on machine tools, robots, and other movable objects where a standard target could not do the job.

Automatic target tracking: How it works.

The Active Target™ itself acts as in a similar fashion to a standard laser tracker target or SMR (Spherically Mounted Retroreflector).  However, the Active Target™ has the advantage of automatically positioning the reflector so that it is always facing the laser instrument. A simple principle with resounding effects: an SMR that will not clip the beam.

Active Target™ advantages:

The Active Target™ will stay locked on the laser beam regardless of its movement or orientation in space. You will not lose the beam even with rapid, unexpected movements.  By automatically positioning the reflector, the Active Target™ makes it easy to measure long rails, the movements of vehicles, and even the compound motion of various robots.  The Active Target™ will even automatically track the position of CMMs and CNC machining equipment without manual user intervention.
